Why does my heel hurt?

The most common reason for heel pain is due to plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a ligament that runs along the bottom of the foot from the heel towards the toes and can become inflamed and painful. A common cause for plantar fasciitis is due to overuse and repetitive strain to the plantar fascia.

There are some risk factors that may contribute to heel pain such as:

  • Improper shoe fit

  • Very high arch

  • Diabetes Mellitus

  • Excessive dynamic foot pronation

  • Weakness of the calf muscles

Common characteristics of plantar fasciitis include:

  • Pain in the heel with the first step in the morning

  • Tenderness to the heel

  • Worse when barefoot or walking on hard surfaces

  • Rapid increase in activity before the start of heel pain

Plantar fasciitis may cause pain with daily activities such as walking, stairs, running and household chores.
